Lionel Messi May Rest in the Next Copa America Game

Lionel Messi might miss Argentina’s next Copa America game against Peru. He has a sore thigh and his team has already qualified for the next round after winning two games.

Messi is 37 years old and has had some muscle problems recently. During Argentina’s 1-0 win over Chile in the tournament in the USA, he needed a short medical treatment on his thigh. But, he played the whole 90 minutes of the game. He came close to scoring with a long shot and was very involved in Argentina’s attacks.

Messi said, “It bothers me a bit, but I could stay until the end. I hope it’s nothing serious. I couldn’t move properly because of the bother.” He thinks it might be better to rest during the Peru game on Saturday.

Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, has not said if Messi will rest in the Peru game. However, many people believe he will rest to be ready for the quarter-finals. Messi also had a sore throat and fever before the game against Chile.

Argentina has already won against Canada with a 2-0 score. They are now the top team in Group A with six points. Canada is second with three points after beating Peru. Argentina is happy to have started the Copa America with routine wins, unlike their last major tournament. In the World Cup in Qatar, they lost their first game to Saudi Arabia in a big surprise.

On Tuesday, Argentina won against Chile with a late goal by Lautaro Martinez at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. This stadium holds a bad memory for Messi. Eight years ago, he missed a penalty there, and Argentina lost to Chile in the Copa America final. After that loss, Messi said he would quit international football.

Messi has won many awards with his club Barcelona from a young age. But he only won major international tournaments with Argentina late in his career. He led Argentina to win the Copa America in 2021 and the World Cup in 2022.

Many fans are wondering if this is Messi’s last international tournament. Scaloni wants fans to enjoy watching Messi rather than worry about his future. Brazil, Argentina’s main rival, is not playing well. They only managed a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica in their first game. The Copa America final will be on July 14 in Florida, where Messi now plays for Inter Miami. This might be another chance for a Messi fairy tale.
